International trade

Countries buy and sell across borders. If each country focuses on what it does relatively best and they trade, there is more for everyone.

3rd grade (secondary)Ages 16 to 18Draft: Not yet reviewed by an economics teacher.

Why

Your banana comes from South America, your phone from Asia and the chocolate in your lunchbox perhaps from a factory in Germany. Why does Belgium not make all of that itself?

No country can make everything equally well or equally cheaply. Bananas do not grow here, and a factory for one product cannot stand in every country.

By trading, each country can do what it is good at. If you understand how that works, you see why a small country like Belgium buys and sells so much abroad, and why trade agreements are in the news.
