Taxes: paying together for what we share

With taxes and social contributions we pay together for schools, roads, care and pensions. How much, and who pays how much, is something people disagree about.

2nd grade (secondary)Ages 14 to 16Draft: Not yet reviewed by an economics teacher.

Why

Your parents say that a lot of their wages goes to the government. Where does that money actually go, and do you already pay taxes yourself?

Your school, the street outside your door, the fire brigade and the hospital cost a lot of money. Nobody can pay for that alone. That is why we put money together.

You already pay your share too: almost everything you buy has VAT in its price. If you understand how taxes work, you can join the conversation about what the government does.
