Discounts and unit price

You work out a discount as a percentage of the price. With the price per kg or per litre you compare fairly which pack is really cheaper.

1st grade (secondary)Ages 12 to 14Draft: Not yet reviewed by an economics teacher.

Why

Is the big bag of crisps always cheaper than the small one? And how much do you really pay with buy 3, pay for 2?

Shops like to tempt you with big packs, red stickers and special offers. Sometimes you really save, sometimes it only looks that way.

With two simple calculations you know for sure: how much the discount is in euros, and what one kilogram or one litre costs. Then you decide, not the sticker.
